HACKING OUT WITH YOUR HORSE, NOTTINGHAMSHIRE

Flint at the pub in Cropwell Butler

Bassingfield Riding School & Livery is located in a prime location for hacking. From us it is possible to ride for over 10-miles through Cotgrave Forest while only crossing one small country road! This is because we have a beautiful bridleway that comes to our door, thanks to our efforts to claim it under historical evidence. As a result, the variation that is possible from our location is extensive, in addition we are situated in one of the few places in the country where it is possible to travel on horseback on a canal tow path, as they were originally built for.

Our local hacks vary massively from the “urban bridleway” though West Bridgford, the Holme Pierrepont Country Park and the Cotgrave country park. In addition to this the most popular ride is though Cotgrave Forrest. Due to the completed work on the A46 there are now two bridges at Owthorpe and at Kinoulton Wolds which have been designed for equestrian use as well as a tunnel under the road on the Grantham Canal. This allows access to the whole of the bridleway network in the Vale of Belvoir and beyond. Because of this vast network there is subsequently several pubs which are within riding distance if you feel like you want to have fun on a pub ride.

If you are a livery and want to explore the local hacking talk to Ed or James who would be happy to show you some of the many routes from our location (some of which may not be directly obvious from looking at an OS map).

If you are wanting to use our riding school horses we will usually only offer our longer hacking rides to reasonably experienced riders, but we ask that you have an assessment lesson first. Shorter rides can be taken out whatever your ability, with lead reins if required.
